Work at CEES: opportunities for undergraduate students
These positions have been filled.
The Center for Earth and Environmental Science at IUPUI is looking for two IUPUI students (undergraduates) interested in a mentorship in service learning. These positions are funded through a grant from the Center for Service and Learning and require an average time comittment of 10 hours per week.
CEES is an environmental research Center that also engages in education outreach and environmental stewardship. Community Engagement Associates (CEAs) work alongside CEES staff to facilitate the Center's mission in these three core areas (research, outreach, stewardship), with a special emphasis on fostering environmental stewardship within the IUPUI community.
CEAs will assist with the Center's service learning program, as well as field and laboratory research at CEES. CEAs may also work with community partners, delivering science education in a variety of community parks and gardens. General outreach activities will resume when social distancing restrictions are lifted. Candidates must be willing to engage in outdoor work, laboratory work, and administrative tasks related to the service learning program and general maintenance of the Center. Candidates should have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

Service learning projects take place primarily on Fridays and Saturdays (and occasionally on Sundays) when weather (and social distancing guidelines) permit. CEAs must be available to attend in-person events. The Center for Service and Learning requires that CEAs maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75. Community Engagement Associates are paid $13/h.

The Center for Earth and Environmental Science at IUPUI is an environmental research center that also engages in education outreach and environmental stewardship. CEES is looking for IUPUI students to assist with field/lab research this summer. Summer employment may transition to regular academic year positions (if all parties are agreeable). Students should apply through Handshake for job #7827400.
Positions are available.
The Center for Earth and Environmental Science (CEES) at IUPUI is an environmental research center within the Department of Earth Sciences that engages in applied research, education outreach, and community-based environmental stewardship. CEES is looking for IUPUI students interested in working to help facilitate the Center's mission in these three core areas.
Environmental Outreach Assistants (OAs) will assist with Center stewardship activities, education outreach programs, and may also be involved in field and laboratory research, as well as assisting with general tasks related to the day-to-day running of the Center.
In particular, the Center needs students to assist with the campus Bird Window Strike Project - a new stewardship initiative that was begun spring 2023. CEES is gathering data concerning the frequency and occurrence of bird-building collisions on campus. The data collected will help inform solutions to reduce collisions and make campus more bird-friendly. Environmental Outreach Assistants (EOAs) involved in this project will assist with data collection, including regularly surveying various buildings to look for birds; when found, dead birds are photographed and collected. Note: this project involves handling dead birds; protective equipment will be provided.
Other stewardship activities are part of the Center's Service Learning program, which provides opportunities for students to engage in environmentally-oriented community service projects (such as invasive species removal and trash clean ups) in partnership with organizations from the greater Indianapolis area. EOAs help facilitate these events and serve as peer mentors to project volunteers. Specific tasks associated with the Service Learning program include (but are not limited to): handling volunteer paperwork, care and maintenance of tools used for service learning activities, and serving as a peer mentor to student volunteers.
EOAs may assist with laboratory work associated with the Center's Edge of Field project (an investigation of the impacts of various agricultural practices on water quality) and field work (vegetation surveys) at the Lilly ARBOR (a restored riparian forest adjacent to campus). Specific tasks associated with research activities include (but are not limited to): assisting with forest vegetation surveys, including measurement of tree parameters (ARBOR project), filtering water samples (Edge of Field project), and possibly assisting will collection of water samples from agricultural field sites (Edge of Field project).
Tasks associated with the Center's education outreach include traveling to fairs and festivals and other venues to provide hands-on STEM activities (with an environmental science focus) for the education/enjoyment of the general public. EOAs may also assist CEES education staff with development of education modules (with an environmental science focus) for use in middle school and high school science classes.
Candidates must be willing to engage in outdoor work, laboratory work, and administrative tasks related to the various core areas. Candidates should have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
Before a candidate can be offered a position they must submit to a background check provided by the university and meet the university’s requirements for programs that involve contact with children.
The Bird Window Strike Project requires early morning and/or evening availability (to survey routes). Service learning events take place primarily on Fridays and Saturdays (and occasionally on Sundays) in Spring and Fall, as weather permits, so Friday and weekend availability is required.
Because many CEES activities occur off campus, a car and valid driver's license are useful (but not required).
To apply: Students should apply through Handshake for job #8138888.
Additionally, please send a letter of interest to Dr. Victoria Schmalhofer at vrschmal@iupui.edu. Your letter of interest should indicate your hours of availability. Also include your course schedule and any other regular time committments you have.
