June High School Service Learning Event

EVENT DESCRIPTION

On June 11, 2015 (rain date of June 12), incoming junior and senior high school students (NOTE: if you have mature Freshman & Sophomores who are interested, please contact us about accomodating them as well) and teachers from central Indiana will have the opportunity to participate in a free event hosted by IUPUI's Center for Earth and Environmental Science (CEES). This immersive, day-long event will provide students and teachers with the opportunity to engage in hands-on environmental restoration, take a science-focused campus tour, and meet IUPUI faculty, staff, and current students. All participants will be provided with free lunch and parking passes.

EVENT DETAILS 

  • All participants should park in the Vermont Parking garage located at 1004 West Vermont Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202 next to the IUPUI Campus Center. Parking passes will be distrbuted by CEES Staff at the registration table on the first floor of the campus center at the end of the day so you will not be required to pay to park.
  • Registration and check-in will take place on the first floor of the Campus Center next to the Reference Desk from 10-10:30 am.
  • A signed Assumption of Risk form is REQUIRED for all participants.  If you are under 18 years of age, your legal guardian must also sign.
  • All participants must present proof of identitification at check-in (driver's license or student identification card)
  • Each group will participate in a Service Learning Project, an IUPUI School of Science tour, and a meet and greet lunch panel with IUPUI students, staff, and faculty.
  • Lunch will be provided free of charge through Campus Food Service vouchers.

ENVIRONMENTAL HIGH SCHOOL SERVICE LEARNING EVENT SCHEDULE

10:00-10:30 AM~ Check-In on the First Floor of the Campus Center

  • Bring a copy of your signed Assumption of Risk form.  If you are under 18 years of age, your legal guardian must also sign.
  • Identification (Driver's Liscense/Student School ID)

10:30-10:45 AM~ Brief Opening Discussion/Group

10:45 AM-12:15 PM
Group #1 - Service Learning Project

  • Each of the designated groups will partake in a series of rotations, each lasting 30 minutes
  • Rotation 1: Tree Planting - Tree Planting around IUPUI's Campus
  • Rotation 2: Tree Information - Calculating Biomass; Diversity; Invasive vs Non-invasive; Tree Identification
  • Rotation 3: Soil Analysis - Collect Soil Samples; Test Samples using Soil Nutrient Analysis Kits; Determination of Soil Health; Soil Erosion and Prevention
