Discovering the Science of the Environment

Overview
IUPUI Discovering the Science of the Environment (DSE) is an inquiry-based and interactive science education program for central Indiana third through ninth grade students and education professionals. Based in water resource and ecological restoration research, this program provides specially designed curriculum and state of the art technology resources to help educators utilize school ground natural areas and nature centers to instruct students in an interactive, inquiry-based environment.  Year-round educational program delivery with a mobile science trailer, after school science clubs, summer  and summer camp programming as well as educator professional development provide unique opportunities to raise the level of environmental awareness and science aptitude for Indiana youth.

Discovering the Science of the Environment is offered by the Center for Earth and Environmental Science (CEES) at IUPUI, and the Visualization and Interactive Spaces Lab, a division of the Pervasive Technology Labs at Indiana University and seeks to:

  • fundamentally change the way students and the public view the environment and their role in improving environmental quality;
  • develop scientifically and technologically skilled students and teachers that are engaged in scientific inquiry and;
  • interest students in career pathways in science, math, engineering, and technology.

Opportunities Offered Through Discovering the Science of the Environment

Mobile Technology Trailer Programs

In school: October - November, April - June.  Summer programming: mid-June - mid-August

Utilizing a mobile resource trailer equipped with interactive technology tools, web interface, and GIS mapping capabilities, the DSE mobile technology trailer program travels to your school to provide FREE educational programming at school ground natural areas. The mobile trailer will also be visiting parks and schools during the summer.  Please contact: Samuel Ansaldi at cees@iupui.edu

Professional Development Institutes (summer)

JULY

The DSE professional development institute will offer summer institutes again in 2017 for teachers. Teachers institutes will help to assist teachers in the establishment, maintenance, and use of outdoor laboratories on school sites and provide several practical examples and tools that teachers can incorporate into their environmental science education curriculum. Faculty from the IUPUI School of Education will help to lead the institutes.

Intersession and summer camps with our community partners

Summer programming: IUPUI CEES is partnering with community organizations to help train camp counselors and deliver Discovering the Science of the Environment at Summer Camps. Counselor institutes will focus on science content and activities that can be directly used in summer and intersession programs. IUPUI CEES interns and staff will also assist in program materials and delivery. Please contact us if you are interested in exploring a partnership for intersessions in Spring 2017 or Summer 2017 (cees@iupui.edu).
