G307: Environmental Problems and Restoration
Department of Earth Sciences
Environmental Service Learning in Mexico

The Department of Earth Sciences at IUPUI is offering a three credit course as an Environmental Service Learning in Mexico summer immersion experience.  The program provides IUPUI students with the opportunity to live in Cuernavaca, Mexico, attend the Spanish language school Ideal LatinoAmerica, and conduct environmental service activities in the community. Students will also be able to travel on weekend excursions while in Mexico. The program runs for four weeks in May and June. The program is open to all majors, but student participants must meet a 2.7 minimum G.P.A. requirement and be enrolled in course credit through a participating department.

The purpose of the Environmental Service Learning in Mexico program is to  provide a language and cultural immersion experience in Mexico with an emphasis on environmental science. Students will have the opportunity to compare and evaluate water resources issues between Indiana/United States and Cuernavaca/Mexico. The program recognizes that water quality is part of overall environmental health and is designed to provide participants with an overview of how earth systems interact and influence each other. In the final week of the program, students will apply water resources background information towards implementing an environmental service learning project focused on sustainable development within the community.

Prior to departure, students will participate in a one-day water resources overview and related tour(s) of central Indiana drinking water and wastewater treatment plants. Similar lectures and tours will be conducted in Mexico in the first three weeks of the program with the final week devoted to service learning projects.
